On his island home of Ushant Yann Tiersen is converting the old discotheque, which has remained for the last 15 years, into a world class recording studio, venue and a cultural center for the community. It will be called The Eskal.

The building is located on the edge of the main town on the island, overlooking the bay with. Views from the studio’s windows and planned viewing deck will give uninterrupted views of the Celtic sea.

Today the new roof was moved into place, marking a significant step on in this project. Follow the building progress here on the website and the dedicated Eskal Facebook Page.

First there was the Eusa piano book and now you will be able to buy the Eusa solo piano album recorded at Abbey Road, in London. The new album will be comprised of 10 new solo piano pieces, each related to a specific location on the island of Ushant off the coast of Brittany (‘Eusa’ in Breton), where Tiersen lives.

The album, released in September, will feature Yann Tiersen solo on the piano, accompanied only by a field recording from the exact spot referred to in the piece of music.

Eusa Book & Field recording image

Only 250 copies available

In December, Yann Tiersen released EUSA, a book of ten new piano scores based on his home Island of Ouessant. Each of the ten tracks comes with a field recording containing natural sounds of wind, rain and the sea, recorded on location by Yann Tiersen – playing the piano piece at home along with the field recording completes the work.

Now for the first time, Yann Tiersen is releasing a very limited edition vinyl of the natural field recordings to go with the piano book. The vinyl is opaque blue color limited to 250 being sold online direct through Yann Tiersen’s own store. Buy on its own or in a discounted bundle with Eusa Piano book.

Important Note
This vinyl record does not contain any music. It contains ten field recordings of natural sounds recorded by Yann Tiersen designed specifically to accompany the Eusa piano pieces.

Eusa, Yann Tiersen’s new book of sheet music for piano, is published today.

These pieces of music were composed at Yann’s home on Ushant Island – also known as Eusa in Breton – off the coast of Brittany. Each song relates to a specific place on the island and is accompanied by a GPS co-ordinate and a photograph of the site taken by Emilie Quinquis. A series of field recordings was also made at each of the locations, and these can be heard at eusasound.bzh. It is Yann’s intention that Eusa should be its own self-contained world and that, rather than be released as an album, these pieces of music should come alive for the performer when played alongside the field recordings.

Although there will not be a Eusa album, Yann has recorded one track from the collection. ‘Porz Goret’ is released today on iTunes and Spotify.

In May next year you will also be able to see Yann Tiersen perform Eusa live in its entirety as he embarks on his first solo tour for a decade.

On 18 December I will release a book of sheet music containing ten brand new piano pieces.

Each piece is related to a specific location on an island off the coast of Brittany called Ushant (‘Eusa’ in Breton) where I live. Ushant is more than just a home though — it’s a part of me. The idea was to make a map of the island and, by extension, a map of who I am.

To begin with I chose ten locations on the island and made a series of field recordings at each of them.

The pieces of music I then went on to write are named after these locations, and the sheet music for each piece is accompanied by a GPS co-ordinate and a photograph of the site taken by Emilie Quinquis.

I decided that the music that makes up Eusa will not be available as an audio recording. However, the sheet music will come with a download code which will give you access to the field recordings I made, allowing you to perform the pieces alongside the sounds. For me it’s important that the music is played along with the field recordings for you to be welcomed to the island. Ushant is a part of me and it is as important to this music as the notes on the page.

On 19 September, I will perform at the annual ‘Islanders’ festival (Les Insulaires!).

Islanders takes place every year on a different island off the coast of Brittany. It’s considered a meeting of all islanders, with people of all ages from Brittany’s islands coming together in one place to celebrate what makes islanders and island life special.

This year the festival will be on Hœdic, off the south coast of Brittany. As with every Islanders festival there will be readings, debates and live music. On top of this, every other island has a stall at the festival— a place to promote its unique culture and achievements. For example, with Ouessant — my home — there will be information about the revolutionary water turbine that was installed earlier this year which will eventually power the entire island.

I will be performing on Saturday night, accompanied by Lionel Laquerrière and Emilie Quinquis, playing songs from Infinity as well as some older material.
